Why do inserted AutoCAD drawings become an "X" in Visio documents?

Todd Staats

I insert AutoCAD drawings as a base drawing in my VISIOdocuments. I add
shapes over the AutoCAD drawing. The AutoCAD drawing becomes an "X" from
corner to opposite corner of the page. What happened and how can I correct
that for the AutoCAD drawing be be visible in the VISIO document? Thanks for
your suggestions!

This doesn't occur in my testing with Visio 2007, but there are many
potential variables here.
What version of Visio, and which updates are applied (service packs and other updates) ?
What operating system?
What version of AutoCAD files, and what file extension?
What steps are you taking to insert the drawing?
Does the "X" effect occur right away, or after saving / re-opening the drawing?
Are you using any Visio functions, like layers, protection, etc., to
prevent the CAD object from being moved or changed?

Depending on your needs, one of the more common ways to bring an AutoCAD
drawing in to Visio is to create a Background page to place the DWF/DXF
object onto. Then link the Background Page to your Foreground Page(s), and
you will see the drawing as if the foreground page was a clear overlay.
This allows you to add and interact with shapes on the Foreground page
without impatching the inserted CAD object.

There are several notes about using Background pages on Office Online here
