Why do.jpg pictures get converted to win on Mac PC's?

When I send friends pictures in JPG format, they arrive on her Apple Mac as
Win something or other...where and why is this happening? Is it the Mac or
my PC converting them? And how do we stop it as the Mac can read JPG but
cannot read this other format!

What version of Outlook?
What message format?
JPG inline or as attachment?

Outlook 2003 SP2, as a JPG attachment (insert), message is created using Word
as the e-mail editor and it arrives on the mac pc as a Winmail.dat...

Is it possible that the message was sent in Rich Text Format? This may
not be recognized on a Mac. Make sure it is sent as a HTML message.
