Why do legacy files refuse to accept ‘restrict formatting & editin

Team:

I inherited legacy Word files (e.g. 2003 or earlier), some of which are
properly protected.

Others refuse protection, meaning entire file can be edited even though form
fields & protection enabled.

My workaround when I didn’t have time to figure it out was to grab a good
file, then add the second file’s content to it without breaking the
protection.

Any ideal as to what the ‘whatever’ it is that’s keeping protection from
working?

I can send a file if needed.
I’ll be researching in the interim.

Thank you for prompt professional reply.

I have experienced this myself. Protection for forms sometimes becomes
unchecked when Word 2003 doc format forms are opened in Word 2007. It should
however be possible to reprotect the form in Word 2007 and re-save the form.
This is made easier with
http://gregmaxey.mvps.org/Classic Form Controls.htm which adds the
familiar Word 2003 tools to the Developer toolbar in a readily accessible
form.
