why do my buttons disappear when my cursor hovers over them?

I have 20 interactive buttons making up a menu bar, and they disappear when I
hover my cursor over them. What have I done wrong? Its never happened before

Your buttons appear to be located in several different places.
For example, button1.gif is located at
hugsrus/menu/awardsbuttons/button1.gif, but this is swapped with a
button located at
hugsrus/articles/button2.gif, which in turn is replaced by buttons
(onmouseout, onmousedown and onmouseup) by
hugsrus/articles/button1.gif
hugsrus/articles/button3.gif
hugsrus/articles/button2.gif

In the meantime, your preload script is getting buttons from the
general folder.

I suggest you check the paths for your buttons in the code.
