Why do my embedded hyperlinks keep changing?

[Hiya!]

For some reason, my Word document is now auto-magically changing what were
static hyperlink URLs into dynamic ones that keep changing on me.
Instead of staying http://<whatever>, they have all changed to reference
files on my C: drive!
No matter what I do, those links look correct when the document is posted on
the Web, but they auto-magically change whewn I copy the file back to my hard
drive!
Can anyone tell me how to shut off that auto-magic feature?
Thanks! I'm about to throw this machine out the window I'm so frustrated!

Try tools > options > general > web options > files > uncheck update links
on save (similar dialog in Word 2007 Word Options > Advanced)
