why do ppt images become so big (in bytes) when pasted into word

I copy an image from a PowerPoint presentation into Word 07 (compatibility
model) and the image is many megabytes, even though the entire Powerpoint
file I'm taking it from, with many images in it, is much smaller. What gives?
