Why do programs hang up when i search for file in look in window?

When trying to open up existing files in various Microsoft Programs, when I
click on the "look in" box my computer stops responding and I have to end
task to get out of the program. I can use files if they are in the list
below the box, but when I try to back up to my computer it gets stuck.
Programs it occurs in Word 2000, Picture it Premium 9 and publisher (probably
in most programs where I have to search for files in the look-in box). I
would assume it may be something in Windows Explorer or My computer since my
computer will not close after I search for files using that method (although
I can access all directories when using these programs). It also hangs when
using control panel. I usually have to end task to get out of any of those
windows. I am using Windows XP media center. Does anyone know how to fix
this?

Two things to try:
1. Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows
desktop, left-click on Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect
any mapped drives that are not currently available.
2. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 "Problems in
Windows Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security
update MS06-015".
