Why do rules I have set not run?

I have set up half a dozen rules in Outlook 2003 to try to automatically
manage spam and other routine list-serve mail. None of them run and despite
looking through much on-line support I cannot solve the problem.

The rules are of two types:

1. Apply this rule after the message arrives, with [typical spamtext] in the
subject, on this machine only, move it to the SPAM folder, and stop
processing more rules

2. 1. Apply this rule after the message arrives, with [typical spamtext] in
the subject, permenantly delete it, and stop processing more rules

Are you trying to apply these rules to your default Inbox or to another?
What type of account?

Thanks for your interest, Brian. I thought I had ticked the "Notify me of
replies box", but had no notification of your posting, so I have done so now.

I am using a POP3 incoming mail server.

I can only assume that I am applying the rules to my Inbox, as my first part
of the rule is invariably:

"Apply this rule after the message arrives"

I can't see an option to apply them to any particular box, though.

With only a POP account there won't be any other, but I had to ask because I
didn't know how many and what type of accounts you use.

If what you describe were happening to me, I'd export the rules with the
Rules Wizard, start Outloook once with the /cleanrules command switch,
reimport the rules, then see if they worked. If they still didn't work, I'd
start with a new mail profile and import the rules after that.

OK, many thanks Brian, I'll give that a go.

I've been successful in getting the rules to run after the export / import
you suggested, without having to set a new mail profile.

Very many thanks for your help.
