Why do some web pages have an aserisk?

I have built a website using Frontpage 2003. It has been up and running for
around 6 months and I maintain it myself. I am by no means an expert on
Frontpage, but I think I know a bit. I have noticed that some of my web pages
have an asterisk on their name on their respective tabs.
Can anyone tell me why they are there?
Also when building the site whilst adding new pages Frontpage named them
"new_page_2, new_page_3" etc. I had great difficulty in renaming them.
Sometimes the name would appear on the tab, but when I opened the page from
say a hyperlink within the site it would have changed back. Or the name in
the address bar would not have changed, or sometimes the text that appears at
the bottom of the screen when you hover over a link would be different. How
do I get consistency.
Thanks in advance to any one who helps.

That means the page has been opened and edited and not saved after the editing.
In computer terms, that meana the page is "Dirty" ( not saved after a change has been made )
Save the page and the asteriak disappears.

FrontPage has no idea what you want to name the page when a new page is created, hence
"new_page_2, new_page_3" etc
You can rename the page by either:
1. Switching to code view and editing the Title between the <title>new page 1</title>
tags and saving.
2. Right clicking in the page and selecting page properties and changing it there.

The "title" that appears in the title bar at the very top of the browser
and the file name you see when you hover a link are totally unrelated.

When you hover a link the file name is displayed, the text at the top of the browser comes from the
<title>This shows at the top of the browser window</title> section of the page.
