why do you need my disk when I download updates

I downloaded 75 megs of udates, it installed for a while, then asked for a
Works disk. I don't even use works so I skipped it instead of searching for
my disks and is tells me that updating was unsuccessful. Why does it need my
disks? What all does it get from the disk? Is it just to confirm that I am
the owner of the software, or is it installing add-ins that I may not want.
