Why does a document in Word come back up all scrambled?

When My mother types a document in Microsoft Word it looks fine. When she
goes back later to bring that document up it is all scrambled. What is the
cause and how do I fix it?

That's a bit like saying to your mechanic 'My car won't start' and expecting
him to provide a solution without knowing anything about the car or being
able to examine it.

A start would be to tell us the Word version and describe *exactly* what she
is doing and what you mean by 'scrambled'.
