Why does a dot show up on my email when I hit enter?

Im using Microsoft Outlook and it just started last nite. When I reply or
start a new message. While typing when I hit enter there is a little symble
on the screen and each time i hit the space bar there is a dot.
What are these called and how do I turn them off. It is driving me crazy.
