Why does a photo end up being twice the size in Word or Acrobat?

I'm trying to submit a very simple presentation of a product and when I open
or copy/paste a photo to Word or Acrobat, it comes out freak'n huge and bad
looking, yet both programs state that the files sizes are 100%...NO THEY ARE
NOT! If I put them to around 70% then they look normal but I don't want to
have to do that.

Can somone clue me in?

Thanks!

Word scales the imported graphic by the resolution. Go to Tools > Options.
On the General tab click 'Web Options'. On the Pictures tab, look at the
'pixels per inch' setting. The size of the imported graphic is scaled by the
ratio of this setting to the graphic's own resolution.

You get best results if you set this resolution to whatever you need (96 is
fine for most purposes, or 300 if you need high-quality printing); and use a
graphic editor to prepare your graphic at the finished size you want to end
up with, at the same resolution.

Thanks! How about Acrobat 7.0? How can I get the correct file size with it?
