Why does email go into outbox without date or italics?

I am using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 for my emails. When I create a "new"
message and click "send" the message goes into my outbox showing none under
date and it is not in italics. When I click "send/receive" the message is not
sent. However if I then highlight the message in the outbox and click
Actions>Forward to the same address it then goes into the outbox in italics
and with the correct date. Having spent hours perusing the help subjects, I
am no nearer a solution.
