Why does email shut down when forwarding with attachments?

I am experiencing difficulty in 2 areas: forwarding emails with attachments
(microsoft word documents as well a photographs) and attaching the same to a
new email. When forwarding or attaching, my email totally shuts down. After
re-opening Outlook several times with several attempts, it eventually works.
I work as a webmaster, so this is quite annoying. I've not found information
within the Microsoft help section. Can anyone help? I am running Office
Outlook 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP2
