Why does Entourage authenticate differently than Outlook?

Email Client: Exchange

I'm trying to use Entourage with my corporate Exchange server (Exchange 2007). I can connect via Outlook while I'm in the office on the network, or through the internet without using a dedicated VPN connection. HOWEVER, with Entrourage, my connection only works in the office on the network - it does NOT work over the internet.

I believe the issue may have to do with connectivity to the SSL server, but even if that's the case, why doesn't Outlook have the same problem?

Entourage doesn't authenticate differently but it does *connect*
differently from Outlook.

What you've done is set up Outlook to always use RPC over HTTP. That
means you've connected it to your Outlook Web Access (OWA) address.
Entourage can do the same thing using WebDAV over HTTP.

You've probably connected Entourage directly to your back-end server
address, which will only be available inside your company network.

I always suggest connecting Entourage to a back-end server address and
using the OWA address only while outside your company network. Of
course, for laptop users this doesn't work.

I do have a script here that will allow you to switch between the two
automatically, provided you quit Entourage when leaving each network and
not just close your laptop lid. You can find it here:

Hope this helps!

Bill - thanks for the pointers - I will try the script soon. Like others posters on your blog, I have NO experience editing applescript, so it may take me some time.

That being said, I can't seem to connect to the Exchange server using the OWA address in the Entourage setup either (this would be on an iMac at home). I will have to look again at my setup here at home to see how it differs from the laptop setup that I created in the office last week.

Thanks!

Are you at least able to connect to OWA using Safari at home? If so then
Entourage should work. Can you describe the login screen you see?

The script won't work for you unless you can connect to OWA.

I can connect to OWA from safari, Firefox, etc.

mymail.mycompany.com takes me to an ISA login screen - I enter my domain, user ID, and password to move on to my inbox.

An ISA login screen? That's a proxy server, not OWA. I suspect your
company is using some form of authentication other than OWA's basic or
forms-based authentication. Entourage can only work if it can
authenticate with an OWA server.

For Exchange Server 2007 you should see a blue webpage that clearly says
Outlook.

OK - so it does say Microsoft Outlook Web Access - it just says powered by ISA at the bottom

Are there any tricks to setting up Entourage from my iMac (never connected to the work network) by using the OWA server address? I can't get it to connect.

Thanks.

If you're using this server address:

server.example.com

then try using this instead:

server.example.com/exchange/[email protected]

where "(e-mail address removed)" is your E-mail address.

Hope this helps!
