Why does Equation Editor display a bunch of symbols?

Whenever I try to use Equation Editor 3.0, I can type the equation and edit
equations without a problem, but when I exit the editor and go back to word,
the equation turns into a bunch of strange symbols not even closely
resembling any kind of mathematical equation. I have uninstalled and
reinstalled office but it did not help.

Let's start with the obvious -- what fonts have you told Equation
Editor to use? With Equation Editor open, click Style > Define,
and send me the list of fonts on the Define Style dialog.
