WHY DOES EXCEL HANG AND THEN CRASH EVERYTIME THAT I TRY TO "BOLD"

when i have completed entering the data on a worsheet and then try to neaten
it up and make it more presentable, evertime i try to make lettering or
numbering "bold". it hangs for about 15seconds and then crashes out of Excel
and goes back to the desktop. Why?? I am using Microsoft Excel 2003 SP2
