Why does Find have Format: Outline sometimes?

Starting a few months ago (I think), I started experiencing odd
behavior from the Find function (Ctrl-F). It would tell me that the
search string was not found when I knew that it was. In some cases I
could see it on the screen.

Then I noticed that the search dialog box had an extra entry that I
hadn't noticed before. It was right under the "Find what:" field. It
was something like:

Format: Outline

It just happened again for the second time today. Unfortunately, I
cleared it before I had a chance to record the exact spelling. When it
happens again, I'll grab a screen capture.

If I click on the "More>>>" button and then on "No Formatting", it
goes away and the Find function works normally.

I do not have an "Outline" style, as far as I can tell. I don't think
it's a style anywaym because when I do select a style, the message is

Format: Style: Normal

I'm pretty sure that the message I see is hust "Outline".

Can anyone tell me why this is happening or, more importantly, how to
stop it?

Much more likely that it was Format: Underline. This is a known issue,
though I have forgotten what causes it. It is definitely caused by
interference from a third-party add-in (I suspect Adobe Acrobat).

No, it was definitely "Outline". Here's a screen shot to prove it:

But I did install Acrobat about the time that this started happening
and I had run it just before it occurred today. I just ran it again
and got the condition in the screen shot above, so it looks like
Acrobat is the culprit.

I'll post a complaint over on the Acrobat support group.

See Format > Font > Outline checkbox. It draws the outlined shape of the
letters instead of solid glyphs - not used often, I suspect. Acrobat is a
very likely suspect (though not the only one) for anything unexplained and
bizarre in Word!

Oh, of course. And I should have realized that you get Format: Font: only
when you specify a font, not a font property (such as Italic, Bold, or, in
this case, Outline). I was thinking of a possible style name, but then you'd
get Format: Style: Outline.
