Why does inserted object appear strangely bolded for recipients?

When I send a message in HTML mode, and I insert a Word .doc file as an
object, the inserted object comes out looking strangely bolded for recipients
(including myself, though before hitting send it looks fine). The text in the
docs/objects becomes difficult to read due to the odd bolding effect. This
doesn't happen if I send in Rich Text format, but I need to send in HTML
format.

It didn't used to happen, but I cannot think of anything that may have been
changed in the interim (same PC, same software, cannot recall changing any
settings).

Windows XP, Office 2003
