Why does it take so long for my word and excel files to open?

It takes from 30-60 seconds for my excel and word documents to open by which
time I sometimes have forgotten what's opening. My other applications such
as my web browser don't seem affected.

Do you have PDFMaker running? See
http://pubs.logicalexpressions.com/Pub0009/LPMArticle.asp?ID=759 for
more information.

Thanks for your answer, but that didn't help.

I think I can describe the problem better now. When I start a program (word
or excel 2003) by clicking on the file or by clicking on "open" on the right
click menu, it takes a long time to open (30-45sec). If I start from the
application, the same file will open immediately. I notice that the icon in
the upper left hand corner of the my documents window temporarily changes to
a different icon before it changes back to the file icon. Hopefully this
will help clarify the problem.

Are you using Norton Antivirus? You may be running into a virus scan
delay.

Hi Dawn,

I have AVG as my anti-virus and when disabled it still took just as long for
the files to open. I also contacted Adobe about the PDF maker and we turned
it off and the files are still slow opening. So at this point I'm lost....

Just because you turned off AVG, it doesn't mean that its Office virus scan
is disabled.

It may be necessary to unregister the calling DLL by running the following
command line from Windows > Start > Run

regsvr32 /u "C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Free\avgoff2k.dll"

for the free version, otherwise check for the location of avgoff2k.dll and
change the path in the above command line.

If that doesn't fix it see
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm then
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm especially in
relation to normal.dot and add-in templates.

Office MVP Beth Melton recently reported her discovery that "If there are
any WLL add-ins in the Startup folders they will trigger this message even
if the user doesn't have any type of virus scanner enabled. Apparently, MS
is using the virus scanning engine to check for macros in WLL files and as a
result it triggers the message. Note other than checking for macros it isn't
actually performing a virus scan....One add-in I know of that still uses a
WLL is EndNote." So you might check your Word and Office Startup folders for
..wll files.

I had the same problem with my Word 2007. I figured out what was causing the
hangup by disabling all the startup programs in msconfig. That can by done
by going into the start menu, and clicking on run, then typing in: msconfig.
Click on the startup tab, and uncheck all the boxes. You will need to
reboot. After you reboot, try your MS word. If it loads faster than before,
that's a good thing. Now, go back into the msconfig, and turn on a startup
program, then reboot again. After you reboot, you should try opening a
document. If it is still opening at the normal, faster speed, add another
item to the startup tab in msconfig. Repeat this as necessary until you find
the program causing the hang up. On my system, it was my cell phone
syncronization/connectivity software. I simply disabled it on windows
startup, and the problem is resolved. When ever I load my phone software, it
hinders the performance of MS word. Word won't start performing normally
again, until I reboot.

Hope this helps clear things up.

Yes, same for me.

Kodak Easy Share causing an issue with slow opening times for word and
excel. (Office 2003)

Startup fix solved the problem.
