Why does Microsoft Word get hung up when saving a document?

Just this morning I had completed a document in Word (I have Office XP 2002)
and when I attempted to save it, the hourglass came up and wouldn't let me do
anything until I finally had to end the program. The Program Not Responding
message came up and a report was sent to Microsoft. An immediate response
suggested I download the latest Office 2002 updates which I did then
restarted my computer, but it did not correct the problem. I immediately ran
my Norton Internet Protection with virus & spyware scan and did a disk
clean-up. I restarted my computer yet again and still I cannot save in Word.
Has anyone any suggestions? Thanks.

I thought I had resolved this problem and I am not sure if I did so by
removing some of the security updates. But the particular solutions proposed
by this article did not work for me. Has microsoft updated this solution??
I still have this hanging up problem in office. Eventually it clears up but
afer about a minute or two.
