Why does Microsoft Word spell check allow "comparewd"?

I misspelled the word "compared" as "comparewd" in a Word document, but the
spell checker did not flag it.

"comparewd" is _not_ among the words in my CUSTOM.DIC.

I don't believe it is a word (or a worwd, for that matter). Is this an error
in the non-user Word dictionary? Where does that dictionary reside, by the
way?

(I use Word 2003 SP1 in XPPro SP2)

Hi Ken,

My copy of Word 2003 SP1 _does_ flag "comparewd" as an error, so it isn't
the dictionary's fault. (The English dictionary file is C:\Program
Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\Mssp3en.lex, and it is not
editable.)

Select the misspelled word and look at Tools > Language > Set Language to
make sure it isn't set to "Do not check spelling or grammar". If that box is
checked, the setting may have been directly applied (if you copied/pasted
the text from elsewhere) or it may come from the paragraph's style.

Also, if the word is actually COMPAREWD, make sure you don't have the box
for "Ignore words in UPPERCASE" checked (Tools | Options | Spelling &
Grammar).
