Why does MS Update think I have Office XP?

F

Fred Hebert

Yesterday I installed "Microsoft Update" which is supposed to be the all-
in-one update utility for Microsoft products. I have Office 2000 on my
laptop but for some reason MS Update thinks I need "Office XP Service Pack
3". The update indicates that it includes updates for Office 2002, but
does not mention Office 2000.

I am a little afraid to install this update and possibly hose my system...

Does anyone know if the above mentioned update also applies to Office 2000?

Is it possible that something else, like Visual Studio which updated the
MDAC, is making MS Update think I have a different version?

Any feedback would be helpful.

Thanks,
Fred.

P.S. I have upgraded to Office 2003 on my desktop, but need to keep Office
2000 on my laptop to support some of my customers who have not yet
upgraded.

Hi Fred,

Microsoft Update does not include Office 2000 series
apps. You'll need to use http://officeupdate.com for those.
The timeframe for creating new product updates for
the Office 2000 product series has expired
http://support.microsoft.com/lifecyle

The Office XP family of products includes the 2002 series
apps. Check in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel
to see if any 2002 series apps are listed.

update in the first place.

I was about say that I only have Office 2000 Pro, but decided to scour the
add/remove list one more time. Sure enough it shows MS Word 2002. I have
no idea how it got there. I have never owned Office 2002. I started with
98, then 2000 and now 2003 on my desktop. On the laptop the only thing it
has ever had is Office 2000.

Add/remove indicates a size of 0.01MB. This has got to be some plug-in or
component that is identified as part of Word 2002 that got installed as
part of something else...

What a pain!

Thanks,
Fred.

Hi Fred,

Do you have a MS Works Suite edition? That package
also includes MS Word 2002. If you use [Change]
on the Word 2002 listing does it bring up an installer
dialog?

Actually the laptop came with Works, but I never used it and I never really
noticed Word 2002 in the add/remove list.

I used Ghost to make a backup of the laptop on my external USB drive and
installed the update. The first time I launched Word (after the update)
the splash screen still indicated Word 2000 but the setup launched and
installed something. It didn't ask for any CDs and then opened Word. I
opened the other office modules (Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) and they just
opened normally.

So far no ill effects...

Thanks for the help.
