Why does MS Word (2003) have to open each document in a new window

Why-oh-why does MS Word in Office 2003 have to open each document in a new
window.

This means that each time I open a document I have all the attendant
toolbars in every window. If I then choose to view the documents side by
side, either vertically or horizontally, (as I frequently do when working
between documents) I lose sight of quite a number of toolbar buttons because
the window panes don’t have the same visible area. Is there a 'check box'
somewhere that prevents a new window opening each time and effectively
restores the functionality that allows me to open and arrange multiple
documents in a single MS Word Window pane so that I can have only one set of
toolbars and menus.

Yours in hope.

PS I suspect the same issue is extant in other MS Applications but I haven't
investigated this as Word is my main work area.

Jay.
Many thanks for your help. I would never have found this on my own.
