Why does my computer lock when receiving a fax/phonecall

We have been receiving faxes to our home number which are unsolicited. I have
been informed the only way to stop them is to find out what company is
sending them. I have since plugged the phone line in and set up the microsoft
fax programs. Now whenever the phone rings through my computer it locks it. I
cannot even Ctrl+Alt+Del.
