Why does my Word blocks?

Every time I want to open a file, MS Word blocks out which means I have to
close it.
I've tried to download MS Office updates but the installation doesn't seem
to work since I do not have the MS Office XP CD ROM which I am asked for.
There's an option from Office update website which says I can download bigger
files in order to install them without the CD. But when the installation
wizard appears, it asks me for the CD ROM.

Does anybody know why is this happening?

Suzanne, since Microsoft kept reinstalling MS06-015 after I had removed it
twice, I followed the directions you give here from Microsoft for editing the
Registry to correct the problem. I would just like to point out that I found
there was a step missing in the instructions. After the step where you enter
the long string of digits and letters as instructed, they tell you to give
the data a value of 1 -- and no directions for doing that! I clicked on Help
in the Registry and finally figured out what to do, but fiddling with
Registry is very scary for those of us who are technologically impaired --
especially with all the warnings about how you may damage your computer if
you do it incorrectly -- so I think it would be helpful if Microsoft added
the missing step to the instructions. Thank you for all your help on this
issue -- I saw the Post where you said that all you volunteers are exhausted
as a result of trying to assist everyone who was affected.

I agree that this addition would be helpful. I myself had to discover it by
trial and error. I'll suggest it.
