Why does my Word program keep shutting down?

I have an older laptop with Windows 2002 and recently the program shuts down
displaying a window with "run time error" . Once the window appears only the
"OK" button and a click shuts down the program.

What is the problem? I am running XP. I have also tried to run Word from
the Works progam and the same thing happens please advise.
