Why does not PowerPoint presentation open any AVI file that is cr.

I have some AVI file created with the Microsoft MPEG-4 V2 video codec that
containes lots of medical images. This file could be played with the Media
Player properly. I need to insert this avi file to a PowerPoint presentation
version 9, but it is not possible. The application is not responding anymore.
Why? If this avi can be played only with Windows Media Player, do you know
which other codec I can use in order to be recognized by the PowerPoint
presentation.
