There are some work arounds, try a custom install and uncheck the HTML
options. You won't be able to install Office SR2 if I recall...

You'll find another work around if you research the office news groups
but it didn't work for me.

The later version of Windows File Protection is what's preventing the
install, you'll likely have to go to a newer version of Office. Office
XP and later work very well with Windows XP and SP2

Is this also why I can't reinstall from my Office 97 Professional CD after
downloading the trial version of Office 2003?

I'm not sure what Office 2003 has to do with anything but since you're
installing an older version of Office you should remove it before
trying to install Office 97. If you have Windows XP with SP2, Office
97 will probably give you the errors described above.

One fix is to remove SP2 if you added it to XP, then install Office 97,
then install ALL the Office 97 SRs and ALL other updates and then re-
install SP2. Of course, if your copy of XP came with SP2 you won't be
able to uninstall it.

Let me know if this is the answer to your question, please.
