Why does Office update fail to install my downloads?

Office Update shows five downloads for Office 2000 (with the comment that
they have already been downloaded) and when attempting to install them, I get
the "Installation was Unsuccessful" dialog box. I then tried to install each
of the five separately and got the same result. What am I doing wrong and how
do I get "Success?

I'm having a similar problem. I have an Office 2003 Pro install from OnePlus
where I specified that the installation files were to be saved for future
upgrades. I have an Action Pack "Microsoft Office Visio 2003 Professional"
that didn't give me this choice. I had to undomain my PC and later connect
to a new domain which destroyed everything that was useful in my profile.
Ever since that time, Office Update fails without explanation. Inserting the
CD has been known to help. The Registry path to the source gets changed to
the CD drive root. Hacking the Registry path back to MSOCache on the proper
drive has also worked in the past.

It would seem to me that Visio overrode my Office Pro install source pointer
in the Registry. I don't have the information to add the Visio sources to
the Office sources so that upgrades to either/both could happen seamlessly so
I've resisted this impulse.

Is there some kind of fix for this? Is there some kind of log somewhere that
explains why the installation failed other than the "pick a reason" list?
This is troublesome to say the least. All the downloads happen. Install
fails.

Thanks in advance,
