Why does Office Update fail?

C

Craig V

My office update continually fails. I can download from other sites e.g.
windows update. Workstation with Office 2003 and XP Pro SP2 networked with
SBS and connecting through PIX firewall.

I am having a similar problem where none of the provided solutions are
working. An error message comes up at 40% or 51% stating that there has been
an error in "iexplore.exe" module "shdocvw.dll".

A damaged control was found in "Temp Internet Settings -> view objects",
this was deleted, and reinstalled on the next attempt to run automatic
updates for office.

I was able to successfully download and run Office2003 SP1 manually, but I
do not know what other updates could be missing. This all began with not
being able to import into a mail merge fro an Excel file, where it seemed to
import; however a preview of the labels showed no data.

Any assistance to get those auto-updates working before I look for other
possible solutions to the issue. So far I have spent over 90 minutes on this
problem alone.

mickane:

The first thing I tell users is to try and repair your Office product in
case it has become corrupted. In any Office product go to Help menu -> Detect
and Repair.
If that doesn't work, try searching the forums for people that have had
similar issues as yours, you'd be surprised that many of the issues people
post about have already been resolved previously.
Also, have you tried every step in this article?

How to troubleshoot failures updating your Office installation from the
Office Update Web site

You say you were unable to download SP1 manually, please try this again
since it would give much better debug information. You can find SP1 for
Office in the Microsoft Download Center:

Just an FYI:
I followed the 304498 instruction and the update still failed.... BUT
I noticed that it kept failing on the outlook junk email protion.... SO
I unchecked that one update and I was able to update office....
I then had to download the junk email portion seperateley KB894384...
Maybe it a problem w/ that potion of the autoUpdater! I don't know...
When you'all are having a problem, what are the updates that you'all are
trying to download???

I have managed to get one stage further however as soon as I try and update
the download fails. When I got to the website and try and download the filter
seperatly I recieve the following message 'that the file is not a WIN32
application'. It was due to a similar problem that I vowed not to use Linux
and switched back to windows

The automatic update for Office 2003 failed - again. I got the error message
"Update for Office 2003 (KB885828)
Update for Office 2003 (KB887980)
Update for Outlook 2003 Junk Email Filter (KB906173)
Security Update for Word 2003 (KB887979)"

The update is now on my computer and the little Microsoft shield is yellow
and won't go away. I tried the script download but I still can't get the
files to load.

What do I do now?

Try the steps below, reboot, and POST HERE if this resolved your issue,
especially the updates you listed.

:

Can you check the following keys under the following registry
location:

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\CodePage

Check the CodePage for 849, 932, 936, 949, 950 - if the string value
is empty/missing, please populate it with:

c_936.nls (like the rest of the values in this section of the
registry) and the other values, respectively, c_949.nls, c_950.nls,
etc. etc.

If this resolves the issue, can you please POST HERE and let everyone
know
?

Where is this text supposed to be? I can't find it anywhere in my registry!
(Which may explain why the update failed - but doesn't explain why it's
missing.)

You go to Start >> Run >> Regedit.exe

You look for
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE and expand the "+" signs next to each to browse to:
System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NLS\CodePage

Then you'll see various keys and values.

You'll notice a pattern like:
"936" with the value: c_936.nls
If you are missing the value for:
849,932, 936,949, or 950, then please populate those values
respectively.

Does this make sense ?

Okay. I found the
System\CurrentControlSet\Control\NLS\CodePage

The 932, 936, 949, and 950 were all there and populated but there was no
849. Also found three \ControlSet\s: 001, 002, 003. None of those areas had
an 849 either (but some missed values - which I filled in with some
trepidation).

Should I just add line and value with 849?
I hate editing the registry - I am paranoid that my system won't
start again. All those yease with a "." prompt, I guess.
(yes, I did set a restore point)

I look forward to your response.

BTW: Thanks for the help. I DO appreciate it.

I am running Windows 2000, and found the same registry entries and added the
one for 849. Download went fine (single file - service pack 2 ), update
started, then quickly got the update failed message. Also had gotten the same
behavior when I tried to update Office 2003 with all three updates as a group
before adding the 849 registry entry. Restarted the computer after making the
registry addition. Also tried single file for the junk email filter, and for
the other update. All failed.
Also, should I just forget service pack 2 and go after service pack 3
whenever that shows up?. Getting frustrated.
