why does Office XP SP3 ask for a file that does not exist?

trying to update to SP3 here and the setup program is looking for PRORET.MSI,
which does not exist on my install CDs. i have PRO.MSI, but not PRORET.MSI.

by the way, I cannot run Excel now because it launches the setup program and
starts looking for that file...grr...

:-(

based on some of the other comments i've read since my original post, i feel
it is necessary to point out that i work for a university and have installed
Office from a "site license"-type CD set that we have here.

anyway, it is likely the same version of the app that is sold as Academic.

The volume license media used for an Educational Institution
license may not be the same as an Academic (bookstore) sold
edition. You'll need to have a CD that matches the product
listed in Add/Remove Programs in the Windows control panel

You can ask the university for a copy or you can uninstall
the copy on your PC after backing up your files, restart
the PC and install from the product you do have a CD for
(be sure its one you can activate).

thanks for the feedback, Bob. kinda what i expected the case to be. does
this mean that users with the Academic version are SOL as far as service
releases go? seems like there ought to be support for security patches at
the least...

i just re-read your response, and my last response doesn't make sense to me
any more -- not enough sleep here. i now understand you to be saying that i
might have provided a different CD during SP3 install than the one that was
originally used to install Office. i cannot say with certainty that you are
incorrect on this point, so i will probably break down and reinstall.

and you think that i should be able to install SP3 afterwards, right?

It wasn't clear how your Office program was originally installed
(i.e. from a network server at the University, MS CD or University
created CD. The Office Suite edition listed in Add/Remove Programs
should be the same as the one on the Office XP CD.
