Why does Outlook 2003 'Not Respond' when opening some emails?

I am running Outlook 2003 under XPSP2. Until about two weeks ago it was
working fine, but suddenly it started running very slowly when opening some
(but not all) emails. It can take over 60 seconds to open a single email.
This occurs whether I am online (network connected) or offline. When checking
with Task Manager, Outlook is reported as 'Not Responding' and the CPU is
over 90% utilised by Outlook when this problem occurs. I regularly archive
and do not have large amounts of data on the system. My system is fully up to
date with all the latest updates, and I have not made any changes to anything
within or just before the period this problem started. I have tried switching
off Outlook's 'Remove Line Breaks' option with no effect.
