why does outlook 2007 stop working under vista home premium 64 bit

(NB I seem to have found a way round this problem - see below - but I am
still puzzled as to why it occurred)

Outlook 2007 stops working under vista home premium 64 bit when trying to
connect to microsoft exchange server or direct to pop/smpt mail server
(running outlook in 32bit mode).

Tried uninstalling Office and re-installling (this after running all
possible diagnostics and repairs on office).

This time round the "check names" function worked and the server and user
names were successfully underlined. However, Outlook stopped working again
when I clicked next.

Tried deleting my pop/smpt account (which I had only created in the first
place because I could not get outlook to work with exchange server).

SUCCESS! Outlook sprang into life, connected to our exchange server, and
started working perfectly!

Next time I started outlook and connected to exchange server, I checked
"remember password" BIG MISTAKE! Outlook stopped working again (when outlook
does this, it won't even start in safe mode BTW).

Since then I type in the exchange server password every time and leave teh
checkbox unchecked and have not had any further problems with outlook.

My experiences would seem to stem from a problem with the home premium
edition of vista 64 bit. Same version of outlook with same settings worked
fine in xp and other versions of vista (I've not carried out a systematic
check though).

All very curious. Hope posting this helps someone else even if it does not
spur MS to get to the bottom of the problem and fix it.

I did try with a clean mail profile. I got the exactly the same behaviour.

As I said in my post, I got exactly the same behaviour in Outlook Safe Mode.

The crucial factor seem to be whether I check "Remember my password".

If I check this, outlook falls over; if I don't outlooks works fine.

I suspect that all the other steps I tried are red herrings.

I'm waiting for a colleague to try and test this behaviour on another
machine with 64 bit vista. Don't seem to get this behaviour on other windows

Ok, I've manged to narrow this problem down a bit more:

The problem seems to be with Vista Home Edition Premium 64 bit.

A colleague can reproduce the behaviour described below on a different
machine running Vista Home Edition Premium 64 bit but NOT on a machine
running Vista Ultimate 64 bit (and not on any XP machines):

Open Outlook 2007. When prompted for password to connect to Microsoft
Exchange Server, enter password and check "Remember my password". Outlook
stops working and will not work even in safe mode.

Workaround is NOT to check the "Remember my password" box.
