Why does Print Layount make my Letter page look square?

Hi,

I've been using DTP apps for years, and this is something I've just now come
across. I haven't used Word much, for reasons obvious to DTPers. Anyway..

I'm wanting to zoom to see the "Whole Page" of a Letter-sized single-page
document, in Print Layout view. The margins are all at default values, about
1". The page appears to be square, as per screenshot:

Notice the horiz. margins are visible in the ruler, so the page appears the
correct width. The vert. margins are not sisible, so the height is lacking
about 2", making the page look short, or square.

WTF mate?

I somehow managed to fix this temporarily, and was about to replace the
"normal.dot" template with the normal-looking page, but before I did that, I
opened and closed Word a few times, and the problem seemed to have fixed
itself. That was yesterday, and unfortunately, the problem has come back.

This seems quite a silly thing for the program to do. Does anyone know a fix
for this apparent bug?

Thanks for any and all assistance. =)

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "White space between
pages" box | OK.
