Why does Project add minutes to finish time

MS Project 2002

I have a start date and time and duration (hours), but the computed finish
time has added minutes. For exampe,

Spot Eq. & Check 10 hrs 10/20/08 10:00 PM 10/21/08 8:01 AM
Standby 78 hrs 10/21/08 8:01 AM 10/24/08 2:04 PM

Can someone help me fix this?

If it's happening to all tasks, check your project calendar in
Tools/ChangeWorkingTime and the Hours per Day and Week conversion settings
on Tools/Option/Calendar. They should match. For example, assuming the
default day=8hours, this sort of thing can occur when your working time
calendar says your workday is something like 8am to 12noon and 1 pm to 4:59
pm rather than 5 pm. If that was the case and a task was entered with a
duration of either 1 day or 8 hours, it would start one day at 8am and end
the next day at 8:01am. Why? A 1 day task lasts 8 hours or 480 minutes.
But 8am-12noon and 1pm-4:59pm is 479 minutes. The system thinks the
resource will go home with 1 minute worth of work left to do that he'll have
to pick up the following morning. The hours will be different in yours, I'm
sure, but I'd expect something like that is going on.

If it's only happening to tasks assigned to a certain resource, check his
resource calendar.
