Why does "save as" function make my Word program quit responding?

R

When I try to save a new document with the "save as" function the program
locks up and Word stops responding to commands. My only recourse is to shut
the program down and start over. But, every time I try to use "save as" the
same thing happens.

Right-click on the My Computer icon on the Windows desktop, left-click on
Disconnect Network Drive, and disconnect any mapped network drives that are
not currently available.

Somewhat similar problem, my computer is connected through office network,
they're not allowing any updates since Service Pack2 came out, can save the
first couple of times I am using Word, Excel etc., then it locks up and I get
a "Not Responding" message at the top. any help greatly appreciated.

BMC has posted this information about similar problems in the last couple of
days and it seems to help. The update he refers to is on my computer and
doesn't seem to be causing problems. I would recommend trying his solution
to see if it helps and be ready to reinstall if it doesn't.

It's a bug in this Hotfix which fixes a bug in Explorer which Automatic
Updates will have installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/Bulletin/ms06-015.mspx

You can remove it from Add/Remove Programs, where it shows as "Security
Update for Windows XP (KB908531)". Make sure the "show updates" box at the
top is ticked or you won't see hotfixes in the list.

Or wait until Microsoft push out an update.

You suggest removing Security Update for Windows XP (KB908531) I have done
this and it works but Microsoft sends it every day - How can I stop them?

Set Automatic Updates to semi-automatic (so you're prompted to download
updates). Keep refusing it until Tuesday, when a corrected version will be
available.
