Why does the cursor go into the body of the message instead of to?

Needing help

When I open a new message or forward an existing message the cursor
automatically goes into the body of the message instead of into the "To"
field. This is terribly annoying because I am in the habit of typing in the
contact, etc. Can anyone help?
