Why does the file open icon on the task bar no longer function?

In Office programs, I normally click the file 'open folder' icon on the task
bar, but for some reason, this function stopped yesterday. If you click on
the icon, an hourglass appears and office is paralyzed. Other programs
continue to run. If you click File, New, and select a folder, document or
spreadsheet from that sidebar, it loads normally. This is Office XP Pro SP3
with all updates. System is an HP notebook ZD7010. This had functioned
normally for a couple of years.

Note: Uninstall, reinstall had no effect on the problem. SFC /SCANNOW was
run as was the office help detect and repair.
