Why does the tab key sometimes start deleting words?

I'm preparing a Policy and Procedures Manual for a graduate class. I'm
switching back and forth from Outline View to Print Layout. Sometimes when I
hit the tab key to indent a line of text, both the space bar and typing any
new words starts deleting what is already there. What am I doing wrong?

Thank you so much! This thing is due Monday and I was about to pull my hair
out! I'm so glad I found this discussion board!
