Why does this TOC have numbered lines?

D

David Thielen

Hi;

In the file http://www.windwardreports.com/temp/lists_doc.zip the TOC
does not say to number the lines in it, the TOC1/TOC2 styles do not
say to number them, but they are numbered.

Is this pulled from the style for header1/header2/etc.? And if so,
what other formatting is pulled from the actual paragraphs placed in
the TOC?

thanks - dave

Hello Dave,

In the spec Part 4. Section 2.16.5.75 "TOC"

<quote>
\t field-argument

Uses paragraphs formatted with styles other than the built-in heading
styles. text in this switch's field-argument specifies those styles as a
set of comma-separated doublets, with each doublet being a comma-separated
set of style name and table of content level. \t can be combined with \o.
</quote>

In other words, if we do not use the \t switch (in this case, we are not
using \t), TOC uses the built-in heading styles. To customize the style, we
can do it in this way:

TOC \o "3-3" \h \z \t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,Appendix 1,1,Appendix
2,2,Unnumbered Heading,1"
(see the example of the TOC section in the spec).

Hope it helps.

Hi;

I understand the below but when you say the built in styles doesn't
that mean styles TOC1, TOC2, etc? Because those styles are not set to
use a list in this document.

What am I missing?

thanks - dave

According to the spec, the built-in styles should refer to the built-in
Heading styles (the styles for header1/header2/etc.), instead of TOC1/TOC2.
In case that I myself missed something, I have sent this question to the
product group, and I will inform you when I get their responses.

One thing to check whenever you see "oddities" in the formatting of TOC
entries is whether the formatting in question has been applied to the
source as "direct formatting".

In this case, instead of the numbering being part of the style, might
the user have applied numbering by selecting the text and choosing some
Numbering from a List Gallery?

Thank you for forwarding the question. I will await your answer.

One thing I noticed, in Word when I am on a line in the TOC, the style
it shows is TOC1, TOC2, etc. So Word is reporting that it is using the
TOC styles.

thanks - dave

I looked and I don't think so. I might have missed something but it's
hard to miss the stuff to set a list.

Hello Dave,

Sorry for my delayed response. I have not got the product team's response.
You are right in that:

One thing I noticed, in Word when I am on a line in the TOC, the style
it shows is TOC1, TOC2, etc. So Word is reporting that it is using the
TOC styles.

However, I still feel that the numbering in TOC is caused by the heading
style of each header. In your attachment, the H1 is defined as this:

Font: UBSHeadline, 18 pt, Kern at 14 pt, Indent: Left: 0", Hanging:
0.59", Don't adjust right indent when grid is defined, Line spacing:
Exactly 20 pt, Space After: 40 pt, Page break before, Keep with next,
Level 1, Don't allow hanging punctuation, Font Alignment: Baseline, Tab
stops: 0.59", List tab, Don't adjust space between Latin and Asian text,
Don't adjust space between Asian text and numbers, Outline numbered +
Level: 1 + Numbering Style: 1, 2, 3, ... + Start at: 1 + Alignment: Left +
Aligned at: 0" + Tab after: 0.59" + Indent at: 0.59", Style: Linked,
Quick Style, Priority: 100, Based on: Normal, Following style: Normal

If I remove the numbering styles in the H1 definition:

Font: UBSHeadline, 18 pt, Kern at 14 pt, Don't adjust right indent when
grid is defined, Line spacing: Exactly 20 pt, Space After: 40 pt, Page
break before, Keep with next, Level 1, Don't allow hanging punctuation,
Font Alignment: Baseline, Don't adjust space between Latin and Asian text,
Don't adjust space between Asian text and numbers, Style: Linked, Quick
Style, Priority: 100, Based on: Normal, Following style: Normal

And refresh the TOC, the numbering disappears.

I will strike the product team to confirm the point.

Hello Dave,

I get the product group's confirmation today. They confirmed my analysis in
the last reply:

what you see in the TOC is not numbering on those paragraphs, it's that the
field result includes the full text of the paragraphs (including their
numbering). Delete the numbering on just one heading and update the TOC,
you'll see just that one result loses the numbering text. Your TOC is
pulling Heading styles 1-3 and since those styles having numbering applied
you see numbering in your TOC. The TOC1/TOC2 style is the style that is
actually applied to those lines in the resulting TOC, let's say you wanted
the TOC to be all red, you change the TOC1 style to Red and it doesn't
impact your Heading styles in the document. The /t switch is a way to pull
TOC entries that the user has manually added to the document, this allows
you to pull entries into the TOC that are not formatted as Heading levels
so it provides more options to build your TOC.

Hope it helps, and have a great day!
