Why does Word 2003 not work (long) and claims to be missing dll fi

I have just installed Office 2003 on my Dell laptop.
Operating system is Windows 2000 SP4.
Excel, Access, etc. work properly.
Word opens but then sends me an error message about encountering an error
and needing to close. It then restarts, stops, and produces a blue screen of
death.
I've opened the error message -- it lists a BUNCH of dll files.
I have applied SP1 for Office 2003 with no luck.
My NAV has the "Office plugin" disabled.
Any suggestions??
