why does word change more than my selected text?

S

When making simple edits (like changing the font face or size via
Format >> Font window OR the Formatting Palette) in Word 2004 for Mac
OS X, Word will also change ALL the text around it (e.g.: all the text
in a table), INSTEAD of just the selected text.

To get the formatting to apply to just the selected text I have to hit
undo once. Undoing twice will bring me back to my
pre-formatting-change state. I have looked in preferences and couldn't
find anything that would turn the stupid "feature" off. Maybe it's a
bug?

HELP,

Thanks you in advance.

They must have changed a default setting in Word 2004, cause we never used
to get this question. Anyhow, to fix it, go to Format | Style, select
Normal in left column, click Modify, UNCHECK "automatically update," click
OK.

That doesn't come up as a default on my installation. The automatically
update checkbox is unchecked.

Well, I didn't notice it being default on mine either, but....it's a really
common WinWord question that seems to only have appeared here lately. Maybe
it's gremlins. :)
