Why does Word freeze up when I attempt to open a folder?

When I want to open a file or save a new file, I can only do so by going
through my documents in the start up menu. When I click open or save through
microsoft Word and attempt to open a folder or the drop down menu, it freezes
up and doesn't respond...why is this and how can I fix it? Thank you.

Go to the email from PW dated 4/19/2006 beginning "Your latest updates have
fouled up my com.... and vote 'I agree', maybe we'll wake somebody up at MS
