Why does Word freeze when I try to add a text box?

Frustrating problem - having attempted to draw out the text box, it does not
appear, the cursor stays as a cross and Word freezes. The file is then
contaminated and the problem still occurs even after rebooting. The solution
appears to be the same as for "why does text appear outside my text box?", ie
open a new document and copy into it all except the last paragraph mark (Ctrl
+ A, Shift + left arrow, Ctrl + C then Ctrl + V into the new document).
Microsoft, please fix these glitches.
