Why does Word (or Excel or Powerpoint) crash on opening?

I have Office Prof Ed 2003 for MAC, which has worked fine until today
(9-16-09). All other operations / apps on my MAC seem to be working OK. When
I open Word (or other Office apps) though, the program crashed within seconds
and gives this error report:

Process: Microsoft Word [189]
Path: /Applications/Microsoft Office X/Microsoft Word
Identifier: com.microsoft.Word
Version: 10.1.4 (10.1.4)
Code Type: PPC (Native)
Parent Process: launchd [142]

Interval Since Last Report: 763 sec
Crashes Since Last Report: 1
Per-App Interval Since Last Report: 18 sec
Per-App Crashes Since Last Report: 1

Date/Time: 2009-09-16 08:11:06.088 -0500
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.8 (9L30)
Report Version: 6
Anonymous UUID: 3C3A1DED-248F-45FD-9DB5-66114312A46B

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
Crashed Thread: 0

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 ??? 0x0142c2a8 0 + 21152424
+ two pages of additional codes, etc.

I have no idea what this means and would like to know what I can do to fix
the problem (if I can do anything). I have re-booted, checked for updates and
finally come here. Any help and / or suggestions would be most appreciated.

That may be a symptom of a Word Data Key corruption - usually because Word
has been running when updates are installed.

Symptoms of Data Key corruption may include:

• The mouse does not work when you use Word.
• You cannot open a Word document from the Search window in Windows
Vista.
• You cannot open a Word document from Windows Desktop Search.
• Word crashes when you try to start or exit Word.
• Word crashes when you open the Open dialog box.
• Word crashes when you save a document.
• Word crashes when you close a document.

Thank you for your suggestion. However, I have Office Prof 2003 for
Macintosh. When I followed the link, the file I downloaded was for a
Vista-Windows Word 2007 problem and could not be opened or run on my MAC. it
sounds like the same problem you describe, but for an older version of Word
on MAC computers. If there is a 'fix' like that for the MAC, I would love to
know where I can find it. Thanks again for your input.

Word 2003. Sounds most likely a missing or corrupt printer driver then. But
see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProblemsStartingWord.htm for some
other pointers. If that fails, try posting to the macword newsgroup.

Bob,

You are looking for the same info as me. But I've found a solution! Try
deleting (maybe just moving) the Microsoft User Data folder from inside your
Documents folder. Worked for me. If that works you can try putting bits of it
back until you isolate the offending file, but I haven't bothered, just
dumped it all as it mostly seems to be Entourage stuff, which I don't use
anymore (not since the database filled up and the program hung - that was the
last time I had to spend hours searching for a fix)
