why does Word prompt to save changes when I haven't made any?

When I open Microsoft documents in Word or Excel, I'm prompted to save
changes upon closing them, even if I have not made any changes! Is there a
known purpose behind this very annoying software behavior?

Another thing, is that the system display of the document modification date
changes to the current time while the document is open - even though the
document has not been modified. It changes back to the original mod date when
the un-modified document is closed. This strikes me as bad programming on
someone's part.What is the purpose of windows messing with the mod date of
un-modified docs?
