Why does Word sloooow dooooown?

In general, no one can explain "why" with as little detail as you've given.

What version of Word, what OS version, and did you just do or install
anything that might have triggered it?

And when asking questions about speed, you should also always say how
fast your machine is and how much memory you have in it.

I have version 10.5.1, Office 2004, Word version 11.3.8, memory 4Gigs. There just was a update download from Microsoft.

What I have noticed is when I delete the 'Normal' template (located in
Users > kenhank > Documents > Microsoft User Data > Normal Word Template doc) the problem goes away.

That file is stored every time I open Word for that day.

Any solutions?

Yes, that's how Word works. Normal is both a global template (storing
macros, autotext, custom toolbars, etc) and the default document
template. When you delete it, Word creates a new one from its internal
settings.

BUT,

You still haven't described your problem well enough to make even a wild
guess as to what you're seeing.

When typing I can type an entire sentence before I visually see the sentence. The entire program lags.

Things I've noticed:
1. This only happens when I open up Word "cold" and the 'Project Gallery - New' window appears, I click cancel or open (either one). The lagging happens instantly.

2. If I close out of the original opening blank Word doc, then go to the Microsoft User Data Folder and delete the 'Normal Word Template doc'. Reopen a new Word doc the program acts normal - no lagging.

3. The lagging doesn't happen when I double click an existing Word document to open Word.

That's the best I can offer.

Yeah, we're tracking that one.

It appears to be a problem caused by Office 2008 when running OS 10.5.1 on a
PowerPC processor. If that applies to you, it's a bug and they're working
on it.

Turn off WYSIWYG Fonts and Project Gallery in Word>Preferences>General, and
see if that improves things.

Cheers

The machine is an 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo IMAC. I'm running Office 2004. I order Office 2008, just waiting for it to come.

I will turn off WYSIWYG Fonts and Project Gallery to see if that works.
