Why doesn't my Excel '03 let me use brackets for negative numbers

I have Excel 2003, and for some odd reason, when I try to format cells to
negative numbers with brackets, the option I would normal choose shows
negative signs.

Has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks,

Without knowing what option you would "normal choose", I'd recommend:

Format/Cells/Number/Custom 0.00_);[0.00];0.00_)

If negative brackets are not available in the Number>Negative Numbers dialog.

This is a function of your Regional Settings in Windows OS.

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Regional and Language Settings>Regional
Options>Customize>Currency>Negative Currency Format. Click on drop-down arrow
and select the ($1.1)

Note: this is under the "Currency" tab in Regional Options. Changing under
the "Numbers" tab only does not do the trick.

Apply and OK>Apply your way out.
